Redbox Instant by Verizon
Redbox Instant by Verizon

Tonight I turned on my PS3 to watch a movie with a daughter and saw that there was a new box on the menu for Redbox Instant by Verizon.  I had to chuckle a bit because I have it in my notes to write a post about how every little town I stopped in while hunting always had a line at the Redbox.

After seeing the new box, I decided to install the software and give it a better look.  After jumping through some weird hoops to get it installed via the Play Station Network, I was finally able to get it installed.  Upon installing it I found out that I can only use it if I use the standard PS3 controller and I cannot use my SMK-Link universal remote that I usually use for controlling my PS3 and other devices.

Upon going to http://RedboxInstant.com/PS3 I learned that the service will be $8/mo for unlimited streaming and 4 DVD credits at their boxes.  If you want Blu-ray movies from the box, then you will have to pay $9/mo.  You can also use the service to rent and buy DVDs.  Though, the cost of the DVDs to rent is about $4 and around $15 to buy.  This is about the same as Amazon Prime and the Play Station Network.

Where I think the value comes from this service is if you use the Redbox locations often and will use the 4 credits per month.  That leaves the service at just $4 per month for streaming.  This is also a good service if you like to rent games.  A quick look at their selection shows that they have a pretty decent selection.

I’m going to give the 30 day free trial a chance and I’ll let you know what I think.
