Amazon vs Costco | Which store will save you more money?

Amazon.com vs Costco
Amazon.com vs Costco

We all know that Costco is the large warehouse store that you go to in order to buy in bulk.  If you think about it, Amazon.com is the same thing, only you can shop for the stuff online and then someone else plucks the stuff out of the warehouse and ships it to you.

At my house I noticed that we were running out of Tide with Downey laundry detergent, Cottonelle toilet paper, paper towels, and flushable wipes.  I was just thinking it was time to run to Costco when I noticed on Amazon.com that they had a $1.00 off coupon on paper towels.  I then thought, “I wonder how Amazon.com compares with Costco on price?”  I decided to do the research and here’s what I found:

Amazon.com

8 Sparkle Giant Rolls (equal to 12) – $7.97 – $1/roll

Cottonelle Ultra Comfort Care Toilet Paper, Double Roll, 48 Count  –  $25.94 – $0.54/roll

Tide Ultra Plus A Touch Of Downy April Fresh Scent Powder Laundry Detergent 53 Loads 98 Oz – $11.90 – $0.22/load

2 of Cottonelle Fresh Flushable Moist Wipes Tub-42ct – $13.78 – $0.16/wipe

Order total – $63.06 (tax included)
Costco

Kirkland Signature 2-Ply Paper Towels, 12 rolls – $18.28 – $1.52/roll

Kirkland Signature 2-Ply Bathroom Tissue, 30 rolls – $18.28 – $0.61/roll

Tide Original Laundry Detergent, 110 loads – $23.52 – $0.21/load

Cottonell Fresh Care Flushable wipes, 400 wipes – $17.99 – $0.04/wipe

Total Order – $85.58 (tax included)
By analyzing this order, you can see that the total cost of Amazon.com is cheaper and will be delivered to my house for free, which means I save a huge amount of time not having to go to the store; I also save on gas and any impulse buys.

The Cottonelle wipes are a much better deal at Costco than Amazon.com.  If you’re looking for brand names, then Amazon appears to be a better deal across the board.

If you buy much food at Costco and you’re already planning on going, then it’s probably a wash in terms of savings, but if you’re just going for non-perishable items that can be shipped, it’s probably better to go with Amazon.com.  Next time you’re at Costco, take your receipt and look up what it would cost you to make the same purchase on Amazon.com . Who knows, it could save you a trip from going to Costco and dealing with the lines.
