The Silicon Valley and the Bay Area are home to some good BBQ joints, but you have to know where to find them.  As you can tell from my post on smoking my first pulled pork, I love me some BBQ!  I’m typically looking for good pulled pork, brisket, and ribs.  Occasionally I’ll have some tri-tip if it looks like they do it right.  I’m not a big fan of BBQ chicken, but I know some people are.

On top of the meat, a test of a good BBQ joint is their sides.  How are their beans, mac and cheese, cornbread, garlic bread, mashed potatoes, and other fixins?  There’s nothing like some good garlic bread or corn bread with great BBQ.

My favorite place to get BBQ in the San Jose area is Smoking Pig BBQ on 4th St in San Jose.  This more near 880 than it is downtown.  The reason that Smoking Pig is my favorite is that they have paid attention to the details.  They know to ask if you want fatty or lean brisket or both.  Their pulled pork is moist.  Their ribs fall off of the bone and they have created some great sides.  I typically order the pulled pork and brisket combo with a side of beans.  Though, that’s after I’ve eaten a couple of their wolf turds, which is an appetizer that is a jalapeno stuffed with cheese and sausage, wrapped in bacon and smoked for two hours…they are amazing!

Smoking Pig BBQ also makes their own sauces; California Honey BBQ Sauce, Kansas City Hot BBQ Sauce, and Carolina Sassy BBQ Sauce.

Beyond great appetizers, great BBQ and great sides, Smoking Pig goes above and beyond by offering great craft beer and always having the blues playing on the speakers.  Check their calendar to see when you can catch a live blues concert while eating their soon to be famous BBQ.

Oh, I can’t forget their deserts!  They also have my two favorite pies; Pecan Pie and Key Lime pie!!!’

The next time you’re looking for a great BBQ joint make sure you try out Smoking Pig BBQ.  I’ve also heard that they’re going to be opening up a location in Fremont, CA soon.
