Duck Hunting in the Silicon Valley | Don Edwards San Francisco Bay

Don Edwards Refuge
Don Edwards Refuge

Did you know that you can hunt ducks in the heart of the Silicon Valley?  Yes, it’s true!  There is over 10,000 acres of tidal areas and salt ponds of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge that are available to hunt on.

According to the California Fish and Game, the season, as part of the Balance of State area, duck season opens on October 19th of 2013 and closes on January 26th of 2014.  The guidelines outline the following daily bag and possession limits:

7 / day, which may include: 7 mallards no more than 2 females, 2 pintail, 2 canvasback, 2 redheads, 3 scaup. Possession limit triple the daily bag

There are 6 ponds to hunt from, though only 5 of them are open all season.  You can learn more about the hunting areas by going to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay page of the US Fish and Wildlife Services website.

In order to hunt at Done Edwards, all hunters must have a current and valid Refuge Permit, CA Hunting License, Signed CA Duck Stamp, Signed Federal Duck Stamp, and Free signed Harvest Information Program (HIP) stamp.  Don’t forget to have valid identification with you when you hunt.

While duck hunting is available in the heart of Silicon Valley, my suggestion is to check the various hunting boards online before hunting there to determine how good it is and to learn any good tips.

Happy hunting!
